7/09 Clarence Cannon NWR

Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge
I arrived at the refuge at sunrise and walked the 1/2 mile out to the end of the pool not seeing much. The pool only had two areas with water along the levee on this side. But just before the end I saw something in the compressed tracks ahead. Oh my Gosh! It was a King Rail. I got within forty yards taking photos before it disappeared into the weeds on left. I went to the end, another 80 yards, and looked back at the pool and it wasn't long when I saw the rail come out into the marsh then disappear again into the weeds. Not long after that three chicks came out to feed. As I was photographing the chicks I saw Paul and Fran arrive at the other end, 1/2 mile away. He had his cellphone off so I walked back to meet them. As I talked with Fran, Paul had started walking the long way in, I spotted a Virginia Rail and we both had great views. I caught up with Paul and just before the far water we spotted the King Rails feeding out in the marsh. We eventually saw five chicks and one adult. On the way out Paul got to see the Virginia Rail.
