8/15 Neotropic Cormorant

Highlight of the trip was the Neotropic Cormorant at Smithville Lake. It was about 500 yards out from access 14 so photographing was not good. We finished at the Squaw Creek NWR which did not have much mud as they were starting to fill some pools for the ducks. We did get lucky to find two Sandhill Cranes though.

The Neotropic Cormorant takes me up to 318 on my "Bird Species Photographed in Missouri" list. See gallery here

7/11 Wood Stork - Swan Lake NWR

Wood Stork - Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge
I found a posting on the Mo. listserve announcing three Wood Storks at Swan Lake NWR in Missouri. It was late and I could not find anyone else to ride a long so I left alone the next morning. Potential 6th Mo. record since the 1930's.

The Wood Stork is my 317th "Bird Species Photographed in Missouri".

6/11 Western Wood-Pewee - Lake Lotawana, MO

Western Wood-Pewee - Lake Lotawana, MO
A posting on the Mo. listserve announces the sighting of the first ever Western Wood-Pewee in Missouri. After some convincing, Paul, Lois and I were off early the next morning on the four and a half hour drive. It was soon located behind the houses continuing calling and following the call we finally saw it in the very top of a tree. Photographing it was very difficult, back lite, tree top to tree top, at a distance. Not to mention I forgot my tripod and had to use a mono-pod ... very unstable, especially for videos.

The Western Wood-Pewee is my 316th "Bird Species Photographed in Missouri".
