2010-07-31 Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary • Columbia Bottom Conservation Area
My first stop was the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area to check for any new birds. None seen so proceeded to the slough where fishermen were at the Night-Heron spot so none there. There were some birds farther down the road. I went back to Riverlands to see if I could find the Least Bittern again. It took a while but I found it closer than yesterday at about 100 yards perched on some tall grass. This might be a different bird as the chest strips don't seem as dark as the one yesterday. Paul Bauer did hear another down the way in the morning.

2010-07-30 Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary • Columbia Bottom Conservation Area
My first stop was Riverlands to test out my new Vortex Razor scope. While scoping the edge of the marsh just past Heron Pond I spotted a Least Bittern feeding in the high grass across the water. Measured on GoogleEarth it was about 180 yards out there, pretty far for any decent photos. I finished the day at Columbia Bottom CA where I found many Black-crowned Night-Herons at the slough across the road from the boardwalk.

7/21 Western Kingbirds Update

Hazelwood • Bridgeton bottoms • Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary • Columbia Bottom Conservation Area
Western Kingbird update - Found two young at the Fee Fee Road spot but none at the nest area at the Bridgeton ballpark or at the end of St. Charles Rock Road. (See 6/30/10) I did find two on Ferguson Road at the west end of the flooded area. Other highlights were a Black-necked Stilt and two young at CBCA and a Black-crowned Nigh-Heron posing at the CBCA boardwalk.
